Where There’s Money, There’s Sven
By: Daryl | July 22nd, 2009You’ve got to admire the gigantic shameless balls of Sven-Göran Eriksson. I don’t know of any other man alive that could take a job at League Two team Notts County and declare “I always said I wanted to come back to the Premier League.”
Gigantic shameless balls.
“When my agent asked me if I would be interested in Notts County I said I am not sure about that, but after listening to the people and seeing the project that they had I said ‘yes’.
And of course the fact that Notts County was recently taken over by money-laden Middle-East consortium Munto Finance has nothing to do with it, right Svennis?
The best part is that Sven won’t even be managing the team. He’s signed a five year deal – at £2m per year – to be director of football. And here’s his plan as director of football:
“We have together to try to find good players if we want to leave League Two. We have to have good football players. Without good football players you can’t reach the League One or the Championship.”
I could have told you that. And for much much less than £2m per year.
Notts County are down in League Two right now, but they’re a team with a fantastic history. They make a convincing claim to be the oldest professional club in the world, so seeing them rise back up through the English league system would be fascinating.
But if Notts County are going to squander their newfound wealth on moneygrabbing timewasters like Sven (angry England fan talking here, and I’m sure Mexico fans will join me) then it might be a while before they make it back to the top flight.
On the other hand, what Notts County are getting for their money is contacts. Sven’s reputation as an actual football manager may be shot to pieces, but he’s still a man who knows all the agents. And if you’re Sven and people keep offering to throw money at you… it must be hard to say no.

Not only do you need good players, but enough good players to field a good enough team to be good enough to beat 23 other teams in your division. Then do it again the next year.

ive always felt that sven was a better club manager then NT. Thats because his strengths seem to be assembling a club as well as providing a calm and professional demeanor. His weaknesses have been on the game day side of management.

The director of football role is perfect for him. He has excellent ability when it comes to assembling a squad. A good appointment for Notts County for obvious reasons. A good appointment for Sven because it’ll allow him to do what he does best without getting sacked after a year for other reasons.
