Where to Find Soccer News on the Web

soccer-computer.jpgIf you’re a US soccer fan like we are, you know that the mainstream media are not big on covering the game. (The entire African Cup of Nations got approximately four sentences of coverage in my local paper. MLS doesn’t get much more.)

This means that we soccer fans probably rely on the blogosphere a lot more than fans of other sports. And since it’s a lot of work to check out every single blog out there, I am personally in love with several soccer aggregator sites that make my life a lot easier.

I thought I’d take this opportunity to share information on these aggregators with you, both to help you in your search for information and to give these site owners a tiny bit of the exposure and positive PR they deserve for all their hard work.

If you’re looking for soccer info, I hope you’ll all check out the following sites:

Soccerblogs.net. I probably stop by this site ten times a day. I’m not exaggerating. The site collects new posts from several hundred soccer-related blogs from across the web. It will give you the headline with link, the blog name, and an opening paragraph or two so you can see if you want to read the entire post. MLS and EPL are well represented here, but I’ve also seen posts on Mexican futbol, the Australian A-league, several European leagues, and even Indonesian footy. Top posts for each day are listed in the sidebar so you can see what’s catching other people’s attention.

DuNord. DuNord is actually Bruce, a real person who sits down every weekday to read and assemble a list of soccer links that have caught his attention. He gives his readers a link and a little bit about each article, along these lines: “The maniacal Steven Wells of the Guardian gives us yet another shot of love for those supporters in Philly with no team – The Sons of Ben. Really funny. By the way, Wells lives in Philly, so its not like an Englishman picked up on the story from across the pond.” No, I’m not going to give you the link to the article. If you want to read it, go visit Bruce!

BallHype Soccer BallHype’s services are two-pronged. First, a real person somewhere travels around the web and picks out articles and blog posts that he thinks will interest soccer-loving readers. He then posts them on BallHype Soccer. And then this same person send out emails to bloggers (like us at TheOffside) with links to posts he thinks will interest us. Now that I’ve gotten over being a litle freaked out by how well he knows my tastes, I find this pretty cool.

Those are my favorites, but we also have a couple of honorable mentions:

NewsNow: Football If you’re looking for volume, this is your site. It collects news from all over the world and posts it chronologically according to when it appeared: Last 5 minutes, 5 to 10 minutes old… Or you can go by date. This is a news site rather than a blog site, but all the soccer/football/futbol news is here.

Footy247. If you’re an EPL fan, this is the site for you. This is everything you wanted to know about English football but were afraid to ask. Both news and blog sites, with a line or two from the article so you can see if it sounds interesting.

We also have a new discovery/late add, Football Filter. Like BallHype, above, this one shares hand-picked links that footy fans might be interested in. This one seems to have a bit of a European focus.

And that’s all that’s coming to mind at the moment, but if you have some of your own we’d love to know about them.

  • Thanks for the suggestion Ahmed, i am happy to let any of the bloggers to do that. If any bloggers out there want to get involved then please feel free to add content etc. I would also be happy to arrange them an admin login which would also let them decide which submitted links get push to the published page, or not as the case may be....feel free to email me if you are interested.
  • Thanks, Ahmed. But I have it on good authority that Ric, who my emails come from, is a real person.
  • And I am NOT in Australia! Pakistan, dammit, Pakistan. What is wrong with your geotargeting? :)
  • Laurie:

BallHype is automated, FootballFilter is manual.

Btw, I think FF can be quite a good tool if Ben (the owner) allows editors from top footie blogs (theoffside, pies, etc) to have accounts and submit urls of interest (apart from their own, of course). community intelligence, but filtered by quality editors.

I agree joejoejoe, 101greatgoals is fucking brilliant.

101 Great Goals has pretty comprehensive results with links to online video of almost every goal in major league and international play every day.

They're part of the aggregator you mention but Pitch Invasion, mCalcio, and Culture of Soccer are also favorites of mine.

And Sideline Views with Andrea Canales.
