Who is the Fastest Footballer in the World?
By: chris | August 18th, 2009Did everyone enjoy Usain Bolt taking the previous world record out back and doing it Old Yeller style over the weekend? (In case you missed it, that’s him above sans final stretch boasting.)
Given the important parallel between sprinting and football (that whole running thing), this leads to an important question: who is the fastest of them all? Just who is the fastest footballer on planet Earth?
Ive got one hint before we get started: it’s not Cristiano Ronaldo. And chances are they aren’t very good at football, but rather a superb athlete who bypassed track and field on their way to the pitch.
But there are some big name footballers deserving a mention (still not Ronaldo). Gabby Agbonlahor and Aaron Lennon come to mind, and Nike were nice enough to mount a competition to find a winner for us.
Well, not really, as that drill doesn’t include a straight line.
Theo Walcott comes to mind, but if I’m picking a pacy winger off the top of my head it’s Bari’s Edgar Alvarez, who has mythical pace and nothing else. There’s also Vladimir Bystrov of legendary status in Russia, while Chelsea fans will enjoy the blur that is his comrade Yuri Zhirkov a few times this year.
Though if we’re honest these days, it’s probably a Jamaican. But I’m fresh out of names.
Now there must be someone down in the dungeons who runs around with sound following in his wake, but everyone keeps darting by in my mind such that I can’t read the name on the back of the shirt, so suggestions are needed.

Joffre Guerron, Getafe and Ecuador, dude is sickeningly fast.

Portly striker Micky Quinn apparently claimed to be “the fastest player in the world over one yard.”

Edgar Davids was quite a fast runner too

Ivan Cordoba used to be one of the fastest, but he’s about 33 now, and he’s definitely not that fast anymore.
Odonkor is definitely pacy. I remember seeing him in World Cup 06, Klinsmann would bring him on late just for his pace.

Its crazy to me that no one has mentioned Marvell Wynne. He ran faster than Ronaldo in the? TFC v Real Madrid game, or is there an MLS bias there too?

Not Ronaldo, but close: his team mate (sadly) – Kaka.

I don’t know how fast he is exactly, but Royston Drenthe is excellent at bringing the ball from one end of the pitch to the other in a straight line very very quickly. Pity he can’t pass, shoot or cross.

Carlos Quintero is pretty quick. Maybe like Martins though he’s quick off the line. I have no idea about either one’s top speed…

I believe that Nedum Onuoha in Man City is a former sprinter, he did 11,09 at 100 metres in his youth.

Overmars is the fastest I can recall.
Eliseu, at Lazio, can supposedly run 100m in less than 11 seconds.

Claudio Caniggia could do 100m in 10.7s

Kaka has got to be the fastest with the ball. Wasn’t Agbonlahor on track to be an olympic sprinter before his football career took off?

I’d have to go with Kaka as well. I’ve seen him outrun Messi while dribbling the ball. I don’t think we’ve ever actually seen him sprint as hard as he can, which means I think his true speed is unknown.
Also, DaMarcus Beasley used to be WAY fast before his injury. Like, in world cup 2002 he was a lightning bolt out there on the wing.

Oba Martins is insanely quick when fit, watching him for the last 3 years was great. But I think it’s Aaron Lennon. No-one can get near to him.
