Who’s for the Premiership drop?
By: Daryl | May 12th, 2007
It’s all set for a big finale at the non-trophy end of the Premiership tomorrow. Relegation means banishment from the footballing paradise that is the Premiership, and all the riches that go with it.
Charlton and Watford are already down, leaving three teams - West Ham, Sheffield United and Wigan - hanging on for dear life. And one of them has to go.
It looks like this, with the all important goal difference in brackets:
16. Sheff Utd 38 points (-22)
17. West Ham 38 points (-25)
——————————————-
18. Wigan 35 points (-23)
Wigan travel to Sheffield United, while Carlos Tevez and West Ham go north to face Manchester United.
Paul Jewell’s men will survive if they beat the Blades, but only if West Ham don’t take any points at Old Trafford. The Hammers need just a point to guarantee survival, so it may all depend on how seriously Alex Ferguson takes this game. Sheffield United also need to avoid defeat to guarantee Premiership football next season, or if they lose they need West Ham to get beaten.
Premiership lawyers will no doubt be willing West Ham down, as that would clear up the nasty little mess they’ve made for themselves, and the one thing in their favour is West Ham’s inferior goal difference going into the game.
Whatever happens, it’s going to be one of those fantastic finger-nail chewing last days of the season, exciting for all the neutrals, absolute torture for the three sets of fans. And brace yourself for a storm of legal action if a Mr. C. Tevez scores the goal that keeps West Ham up.

WRONG!!!! if wigan win, they stay up regardless of what west ham does. wigan’s gd will be no worse than -22 if they win and sheffield united’s will be no better than -23 if they lose so wigan will be ahead of sheff utd as long as they win.
