Why We Should All Welcome Back Cristiano Ronaldo
By: Daryl | September 17th, 2008
Ankle surgery has kept him out of the early season, but looks like Cristiano Ronaldo will be fit enough to play in Man Utd’s Champions League opener against Villarreal tonight.
“He’ll certainly be involved,” Ferguson has promised. “Whether or not we start him is a major decision but it’s probably more likely he will start on the bench.”
So at some point tonight C-Ron will re-introduce himself to Man Utd fans.
And then we’ll see if he gets booed.
He won’t of course. Though it’s clear that many Man Utd fans were and are annoyed by C-Ron’s attempted defection to Real Madrid this summer, even the most bitter among the Old Trafford faithful knows just how important Cristiano Ronaldo is to their team. C-Ron’s absence and Man Utd’s slow start to the season are not just a co-incidence, and very few fans will be stupid enough to make his reintroduction any more painful than it needs to be.
And annoying as he sometimes is (see photo above) I’ll be glad to see C-Ron back in football. The summer transfer extravaganza was clumsy and he handled it badly, but ultimately he accepted Alex Ferguson’s decision that he was going nowhere. It was drawn out and distracting, but in the end he didn’t go on strike or throw a tantrum, he just went and got ankle surgery to be ready for the new season.
If he turns in some half-hearted performances, then we can all start complaining about his attitude. But that seems like a pretty unlikely turn of events. Though there might be some small pleasure for neutrals in seeing Ronaldo booed by his own fans, it’s a petty pleasure. I for one will be glad to see him back in action, if only because his pace and array of tricks makes any game more exciting to watch. And watching a player like that in full flow is much better than watching a player like that get booed by his own fans.

Looking forward to Marco Senna dictating the pace today for the Yellow Submarine. Carrick / Hargreaves (O’Shea / Fletcher) could learn a thing or two from him..

Since he apparently spent the entire summer working on his tan, I am more worried about Ronaldo inevitably developing a melanoma than I am him getting booed…

I’d be surprised if the majority of the United fans booed him, but what booing there is might be more pronounced from the silence, which I think’ll be the more likely response.

A decent 30 minute shift for the king of summer controversy. But didn’t Gary Neville just look way out of his league? Could this guy even start for Derby County?
