World Cup Draw for 2010

By: Laurie | November 25th, 2007

world-cup-draw.jpgMy husband thinks I’m insane. Just because, on a lazy Sunday where we have no plans, I drag myself out of bed and head to the computer at 7:00 a.m. to follow a liveblog of the World Cup draw.

He obviously has misplaced priorities.

Seriously, if you’re a fan of international footie, is there a more important day than this one? Your boys will either be playing their guts out in South Africa in June 2010 or watching it on TV like the rest of us losers, all based on what happened today.

I won’t keep you in suspense any more, except to tell you that BBC had excellent (if Great Britain-centric) liveblog coverage here. And FIFA.com had a list of the pots for each region here.

Asia Draw:

Group 1: Australia, Iraq, Qatar and China.
Group 2: Oman, Thailand, Bahrain, Japan.
Group 3: North Korea, Jordan, Turkmenistan, South Korea.
Group 4: Lebanon, Singapore, Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia.
Group 5: Syria, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Iran.

CONCACAF Draw: (Don’t try to figure this out if you have a hangover. You’re welcome.)

Group 1A: USA v Dominica or Barbados
Group 1B: Guatemala v Turks and Caicos Islands or St Lucia
Group 1C: Trinidad and Tobago v Bermuda or Cayman Islands
Group 1D: Cuba v Aruba or Antigua and Barbuda

Group 2A: Mexico v Belize or St Kitts and St Nevis
Group 2B: Jamaica v Bahamas or British Virgin Islands
Group 2C: Honduras v Dominican Republic or Puerto Rica
Group 2D: Canada v St Vincent and the Grenadines

Group 3A: Costa Rica v US Virgin Islands or Grenada
Group 3B: Guyana v Suriname or Montserrat
Group 3C: Panama v El Salvador or Anguilla
Group 3D: Nicaragua v Netherlands Antilles

South America does this round-robin kind of thing, so no draw for them.

The Europe draw:

Group 1: Portugal, Sweden, Denmark, Hungary, Albania, Malta
Group 2: Greece, Israel, Switzerland, Moldova, Latvia, Luxembourg
Group 3: Czech Republic, Poland, NORTHERN IRELAND, Slovakia, Slovenia, San Marino
Group 4: Germany, Russia, Finland, WALES, Azerbaijan, Liechtenstein
Group 5: Spain, Turkey, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Armenia, Estonia
Group 6: Croatia, ENGLAND, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Andorra
Group 7: France, Romania, Serbia, Lithuania, Austria, Faroe Islands
Group 8: Italy, Bulgaria, Republic of Ireland, Cyprus, Georgia, Montenegro
Group 9: Holland, SCOTLAND, Norway, FYR Macedonia, Iceland

The Africa draw:

Group 1: Cameroon, Cape Verde Islands, Tanzania, Mauritius.
Group 2: Guinea, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Kenya.
Group 3: Angola, Benin, Uganda, Niger.
Group 4: Nigeria, South Africa, Equatorial Guinea, Sierra Leone.
Group 5: Ghana, Libya, Gabon, Lesotho.
Group 6: Liberia, Algeria, Senegal, Gambia.
Group 7: Ivory Coast, Mozambique, Botswana, Madagascar.
Group 8: Morocco, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Mauritania.
Group 9: Burkina Faso, Tunisia, Seychelles.
Group 10: Mali, Congo, Sudan, Chad.
Group 11: Togo, Eritrea, Zambia, Swaziland.
Group 12: Epypt, Congo DR, Malawi, Djibouti

UPDATE: Be sure to stop by World Cup Blog and read the “How It Works, I think” sections by Daryl about what it will take for teams from each area to qualify.

So, uh, what’s with the UK teams being capitalized? Is this to make everyone feel better about not making the Euros?

Oops. Guess I should have made it less obvious that I was copying from a BBC site, eh? :-)

Oooh, North Korea vs. South Korea — interesting. And after Iraq’s win of the Asian Cup, their draw against Australia is a big unlucky.

Juliet, I was thinking the same thing on both counts. Australia seems to have drawn the one true group o’death.

Italy get a freaking easy draw, compared to 1 or 2 other groups. Need to be careful of Ireland.

If they’re not going make a rule to give the previous champions a free pass, then it’s the least they can do.

The CONCACAF bracket is designed to produce 2 years of horrible matches that ensure Mexico and the US ALWAYS qualify. The kicker is they never have competitive matches that prepare them for the better competition in the World Cup. Enjoy sucking forever CONCACAF.

joejoejoe: Try and find a system that won’t ensure Mexico and USA go through, I dare you.

Sam: Merge the qualifying of CONCACAF and COMMEMBOL together. Let 45 nations fight for 8 places. Done.

Doggy- you think Conmebol would ever agree to that or Jack Warner’s carribean mafia voting block?

And I disagree that this is a guaranteed through for Mexico. Canada are getting better, Hondorus has the best striker in the region and Jamaica are better than some of the teams in other groups. This year it was designed to give the US and Costa Rica a free ride to the hex.

Sam - I’m not trying to prevent Mexico and USA from advancing, I’m just saying the top teams should play each other more frequently in whatever format so they’re more prepared in the World Cup itself.

Give the highest 3 ranked teams a bye to 10 team table and then let the rest of the teams play their way into a table through 7 4 or 5-team groups. Then the US and Mexico play 20 games to qualify, same as CONMEBOL, but they play the games against every other Top 10 team instead of playing home and away against Dominica to “advance” to the next round.

18 games against the other top 9 teams in CONCACAF is a lot better for development than 4 games vs. clearly inferior competition before advancing to a group stage that segregates the other top two sides in separate groups. The system is rigged to get Mexico and the USA into the final group of 6 where there are 3 guaranteed WC qualifying spots.
