World’s Largest Soccer Game

If the above looks a bit crowded, that’s because it’s the World’s Largest Soccer Game.

Back in 1988, SUNY College at Oneonta tried to get 1,000 players together for a game of 500-a-side. They fell just short, but still had 752 players playing 376-a-side in a game that finished 5-3 after 90 minutes. To commemorate that event, the current students and staff restaged the event last night, and broke the 1,000 player mark.

“The official count was 1,021,” says organizer Jared Brett Lefkowitz. “But others rushed the field as well.” The rules were: 15 minutes each way, a giant 40-inch diameter ball, 12 referees and – for some pretty obvious reasons of safety – no cleats. It might look damn near impossible to score (I imagine it’s sort of what the Chelsea vs Liverpool Champions League semi-final will be like) but somehow the white team breached the 500+ strong red defence to win 1-0.
