“Worst Miss Ever!” – Except This Actually Might Be

By: Daryl | November 3rd, 2009

YouTube videos (and blog posts, including some of mine) often come with hyperbolic titles. So when I see anything titled “Worst _____ Ever!”, I immediately reach for my skeptical spectacles.

However, the above YouTube video titled “Worst football miss ever!” made me put them down again. I’m not saying that it’s categorically, definitely, no takesy-backsies the worst miss ever. Just that if we ever have that discussion, then Dinamo Zagreb’s Ilija Sivonjić failing to finish an open goal from three inches out has to be somewhere in the conversation.

Mostly because the usual “worst miss” videos feature balls being struck hard and over from close range. It looks bad, but you can sort of understand how it happened because anything can happen when you attempt to strike a ball hard.

But in this case that excuse just isn’t valid. There’s a defender at Sivonjić’s back, but seems all Sivonjić has to do is gently poke the ball home. Or even just not do anything, as it was almost certainly going in anyway. So, worst miss ever? Has to be up there. Do you have anything that compares?

Actually makes me curious to chart out more “own saves”. I wonder if this thing is as common as defenders making own goals?

I remember in the CL two years ago, with Liverpool and Arsenal playing in the quarters. Fabregas was going to score a goal that probably would have gotten Arsenal with a major advantage but Bendtner ran right in front of the ball to stop the goal. Still can’t forget that moment…
