Would You Rather: Club Win Champions League, or Country Win World Cup?

By: Daryl | October 20th, 2009

Just over a week ago, I gave everyone two hypothetical options. Option A: Your club wins the league title. Option B: Your country wins the World Cup. Club vs country. The most popular answer by far was “country” and winning the World Cup. The second most popular answer was “country, but if you’d said Champions League instead of league then maybe things would be different.” So… no prizes for guessing which question I’m about to ask. I’m going to do it properly this time.

You have two options to choose from:

Option A: Your club wins the Champions League (or continental equivalent, like Copa Libertadores)
Option B: Your country wins the World Cup.

Doesn’t matter if your club or country is unlikely to win either trophy in reality. Just imagine it’s possible. So if you could choose one or the other (you can’t choose both) then would you rather your club wins the Champions League or your country wins the World Cup?

“USA winning the World Cup. cause it would piss off sepp blatter”

I’d think FIFA would absolutely be licking their lips at the potential marketing revenues that could be produced after the USA win a World Cup.

“I have a sneaking suspicion that the USA winning the World Cup might not exactly be the best thing yet.”

But, like Ryan said, winning the World Cup at this stage could actually backfire for soccer in the United States… if you think American sports fans thought little of soccer, wait until the USA “conquers the world” in a sport that they couldn’t care less about and that the rest of the world dies over. But that’s a discussion for another day!

And in the opposite vein as Bruno (with Brazil and Brazilian Club Y)… Barca could reasonably win the Champions League any year, so definitely the World Cup!

    world cup without a doubt.
i’d even let my team (who i have maybe missed watching ten games in the last five years) get relegated to see my country win the world cup.

The Kuduzela is made from injected plastic into metal molds, the design of the Kuduzela is one thing that stays, but the colors are another thing and it can be very different from one to another. The best Kuduzelas are the ones with the official World Cup colors, but you can find the teams Kuduzela’s and the national flags Kuduzela’s.

For the US, a World Cup win of course.

For France, I would like to see their clubs go deep in the CL, including the finals. France has already proven themselves with appearing in two of the last three WC finals.

But for Ligue 1 to grow in popularity, they need to do better in European play. Lyon’s win yesterday will help move toward that goal.

I’m going country. Denmark winning the WC over FC Midtjylland winning the CCL, but mostly because I would fear for the stability of the space-time continuum if such an unlikely scenario as the latter occurred. I mean, they haven’t yet made it to the group stages of the UEFA Cup and they’re going to knock out the likes of Barcelona and Manchester United? Uh uh.

OOOH- tough question. Being that Italia just won, and will win again in the future and that it has not happened in FOREVER I would have to say Fiorentina in Champs league

World Cup, without a doubt. Plus, if Caley Thistle won the Champions League, I’d start looking for it raining frogs and locusts. The end would surely be nigh.

I would have to take the US winning the WC over Newcastle winning the CL. Could give a rat’s ass about what anyone else says about the Americans winning the world cup- I want to see it. As for Newcastle, well, I will just go off into a corner and cry some more. And leave it at that.

Country, no doubt. With clubs, there’s always next year, but with country, you don’t get to see your favorite players as often compete on the highest level of football. So Champions League victories can wait, but football glories for the country can’t be matched.

Oh, this is tough. Since I’ve seen France win the world cup, I’m going with a PSG champions league. By the way, everyone seems to be answering the country thing based on their country of origin. I am not French, but I simply cannot imagine supporting another national team. Am I doing this wrong?

I like Celtic, Hoffenheim, Wolfsburg, Getafe, Sevilla, Roma, Genoa, Arsenal, Bordeaux, and last and currently least Real Madrid. I don’t know if I could be considered a complete Madridista, but I just have to go against the grain when everyone is so pro-Barca and anti-Madrid.

My favorite European club is Fulham. So… the chances of Fulham winning the Champions League are about as good as the chances of the US winning a World Cup in the next three cycles.

Now, my favorite American team, Chicago, stands a much better chance of winning the CONCACAF Champions League than Fulham or the US. Still remote, but hey, if they ever get into the knockout stages anything can happen. Am I allowed to cheat like that?

Just realized I never answered a would you rather with that…

Since they’re all rather equally unlikely, I’d say the US winning a World Cup would just about make my soccer life. I’d try my hardest to get to a game if Chicago were playing for the CONCACAF Champions League trophy, and if Fulham EVER play in the UEFA Champions League, I will die.
