Would You Rather: Club Win the League? Or Country Win the World Cup?
By: Daryl | October 12th, 2009
Two new things on The Offside. First of all, Daily Dose will no longer be the last post of the day. We’ll still do the Daily Dose obviously, because it’s an Offside institution. But we’ll also be adding an extra post afterwards to finish the day and take us through the night. Hopefully a post like this one, which isn’t particularly newsy but has the potential to start a bit of discussion.
Second of all, allow me to introduce a new feature. It’s called Would You Rather? It’s a bit like Soundoff, where we want your opinion. Except there are only two options and we’re asking you to choose.
For the inaugural Would you Rather?, a classic problem faced by players and managers everywhere, but very rarely by fans: Club vs Country.
Here’s the question. If only one of the following could happen – you can’t have both – then which would you prefer:
a) Your club team wins the league title? or
b) Your national team wins the World Cup?
You can have one or the other. You can’t have both. Which would you prefer?

Juve are gonna have truckloads of Scudetto while New Zealand are barely able to qualify, so NZ to win WC

My club has won the League in Norway 16 out of the last 20 years.
To see Norway win the World Cup would be the most insane thing ever.

I’d rather see either of my countries (Canada and Argentina) win the World Cup than Arsenal win the league.
Although Canada even qualifying one of these times would be just peachy as well.

Country, but not yet.
I hope the US makes the quarters or semis this time around, to get fans interested, but not make them overconfident, that we’re “that good” regardless.Posted from

i’d definitely go for a USA World Cup win first and foremost, especially if we can beat Italy and Mexico along the way and England in the final. can you imagine the English press if that happened?

Seeing how I already got to experience Italy winning the World Cup in 2006 and how Milan hasn’t won the Scudetto since 2004, I’ll say I’d want to see Milan win the Scudetto.

You should have exempted all Liverpool fans from having to consider that question this season!

Atletico winning La Liga vs. Mexico winning the WC.

Hmmm…that’s really tough.
As a Barnsley fan, that would mean promotion, but the effedt og England winning the world cup on the entire country would be incredible.

No question that in my lifetime, I’d love to see Spain win the WC.

This for me, is not a tough question. As an American, it’d be great to see the USA win the world cup because it’d legitimize us as a footballing nation. And my club, Chelsea, has already won two titles recently. Now…if it were the Champions League, then it’d be a different story. That trophy has eluded us twice in a row when we should have won it.

the US to win the world cup, definately. because I might actually drop dead if that happened.

hmmm. Iran win WC or newcastle win championship. I think newcastle have a chance of winning, if it were the prem it would be different. I have to go with Iran and the wc. maybe 2014

I gotta shake my head anytime I see a club vs country debate… How can some stupid club possibly come over your own country?!?
I would much rather see Korea win the WC, or just see Canada even MAKE the WC…… than see Valencia win the treble 10 years in a row AND Daejeon Citizen becoming the new Real Madrid AND Toronto FC becoming the greatest team the friggin world has ever seen

I’ve always maintained that country comes first. I think its the ultimate dream for anyone involved in football to be in a World Cup and better to win it. So its obvious to me that I’d love England to win the world cup over Liverpool winning the league – yes, Liverpool, even though they havent won it in 20 years now! I mean, at least LFC have a chance every year, whereas England only get a go every four years.
Can’t wait for the World Cup!

World cup world cup world cup
Its simple insane
Poland were hosts to 2 major european tournaments recently (mens bball and womens volleyball) and won the mens european championship on top of that only this year and the feeling cannot be compared to anything
That’s why champions league means much less than world cup I think
I’m a pretty huge club fan but only poland games make me feel special, make my skin shiver, etc. Only singing the national anthem with 20-50 thousand other fans makes me feel invincible

The World Cup… but since it won’t happen in my lifetime, I’ll settle for being able to watch a Futsal match.
By the way… Brazil vs Hungary (Futsal Friendly) on PFC this Monday.

World Cup for me too.
But then we are asking this question on a forum for a website about the World Cup, and international football in general so it’s hardly surprising that most of us choose the World Cup. Ask the same thing on a Serie A forum, or a Premier League forum and the response would be rather different.
For me, (Newcastle United fan by the way) I have always loved international football – even my subbuteo was the World Cup edition! – and no matter how big a domestic league the Champions League gets, and no matter how much higher in quality it is than international football, nothing for me can match the excitement, drama, passion and that sickness in the stomach feeling that a World Cup provides.Posted from
