Yoann Gourcuff - The Next Big Thing

By: Daryl | January 12th, 2009

It was suggested to me a while back that Yoann Gourcuff is the next big thing. Not just another “new Zidane” (hallo to Bruno Cheyrou) but the next big celebrity footballer, a la David Beckham.

At least some part of that is based on his willingness to shed layers of clothing, and then bask in the attention that comes with it. But the Frenchman’s also got the other part down - the football part - as his (and I hate to say it) Zizou-esque goal for Bordeaux in yesterday’s important 4-0 win over PSG shows.

He had a few nice passes as well yesterday, arguably is best performance for the navy and white.

What was interesting about this game is that Blanc subbed him off in the last couple of minutes (probably so he could get his deserved ovation.) As everybody was cheering and screaming, they showed a shot of his dad, Christian (manager of Lorient) and he wasn’t even cracking a smile.

I’m guessing Yoann also got the “keep your pants on” lecture before the match.

Perhaps this kind of parental pressure will keep him grounded?
