You Can’t Score Through the Side Netting
By: Daryl | January 26th, 2009
Bit of controversy in the Campeonato Carioca (Rio de Janeiro State Championship) on Saturday, when Botofogo defender Alessandro scored a header against Boavista… through a hole in the side netting.
You don’t need me to tell you that you can’t do that, but Alessandro wasn’t going to let that stop him celebrating.
Thanks to the good folks at 101GG we have video of the “goal”. It’s six minutes in:
Something about the smile on Alessandro’s face says he knows what just happened.
The Boavista players were understandably upset, and refused to kick off again until the goal was ruled out. Which it was, eventually, although Botofogo are now upset because they’re convinced the ref used video evidence to make his decision. Which isn’t a great argument is it?
Not sure who the ref was, but let’s not rule out infamous phantom goal ref Stuart Attwell just yet.

Hello Daryl,
This is George Toland. I recently sent you two emails regarding whether or not I can write for the ‘offside’. I’m not sure if you’re busy or not, but could you please reply to my emails!
Thank you!
P.S I would either like to write about Valencia (or possibly Arsenal) or write about my FIFA 09 managerial career.
Thanks again.

Chelsea scored in similar fashion in the 70s. The ball went through the bottom of the side netting and the goal was given. Chelsea won 2-0 that day against Ipswich Town.

Try telling Reading they can’t score through the side netting, they did so against Watford this season too!

The opposite happened for Southampton (I think). The ball went in the goal very close to the post, going through the side netting, rebounding around the post. The ref believed it hit the post and played on, luckily they scored soon afterwards.
