You Know Zlatan?

By: chris | October 5th, 2008

Francesco Antonioli knows Zlatan.

Someone once called him half-gangster, half-ballerina. Got the ballerina part right for sure, because the pure athleticism required to even attempt that shot is astounding. To execute? Unthinkable.

(He’s humble, too.)

Ibra waited for the ball, he did stick his foot out but it wasn't until the ball was in the position that he needed it to be that he moved his foot looking for the contact...he wasn't hoping for contact, he looked for the contact, he pushes the ball, it's not like the ball merely bounced off his foot, which is probably what happens in Mele's school.
  • Nimrah
yep this is certainly both luck AND skill. couldnt have done it without either. as someone said yes nearly all goals ARE luck if you stop to consider it.
And er... i dont think highschool kids can do it.
  • Maryam
    omg I love this goal.
I am a HUGE Inter supporter and a great fan of Zlatan.
He is an amazing player, there is no way you can go around the fact.
I am not really sure if the goal is luck or skill, I think it is most likely a bit of both. The one thing you can't deny is the fact that it is one hell of an entertaining goal! =]
    Forza Inter!
  • mele419
    Negative Rob.
  • Shane
    All goals are luck.
  • bobby_digital
    lol @ rob...

mele... relax bro... i think you missed the point... yes it was luck that the ball went in, but to even have the idea to try it and put your body in that position and to be able to steer in the direction of the goal, is where the skill comes in... just see if you could even get your heel that high...zlat is a tall dude, so his heel mustve been atleast 5 feet off the ground... this was about 90% skill, 10% luck..if u cant see that, thats your problem..

And also lack a sense of irony.
  • mele419
    Not to mention the immaturity.
  • mele419
I'm not the one that needs a chill pill.
Why do people feel the need to be arrogant douchebags on the internet? Is it really necessary?
  • lol Mele. Take a freaking chill pill.
  • Ibra is so frustrating. Yes, he makes this amazing goal (which Adriano says they practice in training) but then misses an open goal later in the same match.

Re Mourinho: sure, Inter have not had the same start to the season that they have had for the last two years, but I still like the guy. He is entertaining in the press, the squad all seem to like him, and I think that the team has real potential. It may take him a while to make things go the way he wants them too, but that is always the case with a new coach. I say it is too soon to judge his success or failure.
  • mele419
    Matt, you're one ignorant fuck.
If it was Kaka i'd say it was luck as well.
Get off your high horse douchebag.
  • Rob
Luck? It's a fantastic piece of skill well executed. You need a bit of luck to pull of a bicycle kick but it doesn't make it any less of a skill.
  • It's somewhere in between. It required both luck and skill. A lot of both.
  • The comments make me lol. Ursus is right. You can't expect this result if the player doesn't even have the confidence to try such a shot.

Zlatan's growth never ceases to amaze me. I remember clearly when he stole Kallstrom's penalty and now he's giving them away. At any rate, he's only going to get better.
  • Chubby
Pure luck and dangerous play. This kick was for taekwondo tournament, not a football game, why can't you understand?? He almost took the guys head off. If Gattuso make challenge like this in mid he will be cursed forever and spitted over, but when it was Zlatan (and I do know that he is incredibly talented TEAM player :O ) OH MY GOD!!! Reactions reach orgasmic proportions. It was a fluke - same like missing empty net from a meter, if know what I mean.
  • habula habula habula, e ah habula habula habula
  • matt
mele: he tries shit like that and makes it work alot. if it was kaka you'd be having difficulty hiding your boner.
  • Lissette Evil Blue
its not the 1 time he does this kind of thing
  • shane
Ibra may be a great player. I don't think anyone is disputing his ability. But this goal is not a demonstration of his ability. It is a lucky goal pure and simple. Ibra has had many goals that involved way more skill than this one.
  • mele419
Alright, one more comment, how can you say only the great geniuses of football would think to do something like that?
He stuck out a freakin foot.
    That's all.
    Highschool kids
    in my school
    do this
    in practice
    and score. It's l-u-c-k.
  • The goal may have been luck, but the confidence to attempt something like that tells a better story of the type of player that Zlatan is. He is a genuis, and really a joy to watch. This goal is only icing on the cake for a guy who can score goals from some fantastic touches.
  • mele419
    I'm done arguing this.
I believe it's luck, and that's that. Keep thinking whatever you want, he stuck out a foot and hoped for contact and he got lucky. That's that, I'm done here!
  • shane
Any player can do it if they stick their heel out like that. It rarely results in a goal because it is purely luck. He achieved what he was trying but it doesn't mean it was skill. He was hoping to make contact and that it would result in a goal. He achieved that but it doesn't take away from the fact that it was all luck.
  • As much as I hate Inter, only the great geniuses of football would think to do something like that, and Ibra is one of them.
  • mele419
Had Rino ever been put in a position to do one?
Does Rino play in a roll where he would?
    Negative.
    Again...
    luck.
    luck.
    luck.
  • The heel flick is a skill. Only the more technically inclined players can do it to perfection. Have you ever seen Gattuso do a heel flick?
  • mele419
On top of that, you could put him in the same position 99 more times and he would miss every time.
  • mele419
    There was no skill.
He put his foot up trying to make contact and it went in. My highschool JV team scores like this in practice all the time. Coach kicks a ball, someone throws up a foot, knee, shin, ankle, it goes in. Luck.
  • Phil
You could argue that you need luck to score any type of goal. But to say there's no skill involved there would be silly.
  • mele419
But nothing anyone has said here changed the fact that it was simply luck.
And if I recall, Inter, the three year back to back to back champions, only beat Bologna, a side promoted this year, by one goal, whether you say it was the lucky one, or the penalty, either way, doesn't seem to me as if Mourinho is doing a fantastic job at Inter.
  • Of course you need some luck for that to go in, but the fact of the matter is Ibra had the confidence to try it, and it worked. Most players wouldn't even attempt to do that in training, yet Ibra had the audacity to do it during the game with excellent results.
  • A
It was a brilliant piece of improvisation.
  • shane
Its still luck. Any attempt like that is luck. He just tried to make contact which he did and then it was all luck that the shot went in.
  • ursus arctos
Mele could not be more wrong.

Ibra tries something like that (not necessarily a shot, but often a pass) at least once a half on average.

Perhaps his greatest strength is his martial arts-honed ability to maintain his balance, control and power in truly freakish positions (see Exhibit A above). And yet it often fails miserably, often leading to a head shake and short sulk, thereby driving the Meazza crowd to distraction.

But he knows exactly what he is trying to do.

And of course, the night that he pulls it off to spectacular effect is one that I was stuck in the office instead of at the ground.
  • watched the entirety of this game and was incredibly impressed with Inter. Mourinho has them very cohesive and its really pleasant to see Adriano making an impact again.
  • matt
everytime i think my boy berbatov is gaining on him in the big striker with crazy skill sweepstakes then zlats-o-fun goes and does some shit like this. what a boss.
  • mele419
    Luck. Pure Luck.
    Nothing more.
