You Say Tough Love, I Say Assault & Battery.

By: chris | May 1st, 2009

Soothing a player’s ego is a tried and true way of extracting the most of his potential. A kind word here, a soothing pat there, a strange nude encounter in the shower – it all works.

And then sometimes it doesn’t, at which point it’s time for some old school tough love. A technique which this Romanian coach of unknown name and club displays on his player. Could you imagine if a little scuffle ensued between Villa and Tottenham which prompted ‘Arry to punch Jermain Defoe upside the head repeatedly? Nor I. Bless you, Eastern European football.

The coach’s name is Mănescu. It’s not the first time I Hear about this style of coaching in Romania, 20 years ago it was a common practice
