Zat Knight begins his Aston Villa career with a Drug Bust

zat-knight.jpgDefender Zat Knight sat at a press conference on Wednesday and dutifully answered questions from the assembled media. One question that was not asked of Aston Villa’s new signing was what he did earlier in the day. If such a question were posed, he would have responded that he was at a jail after being arrested by police in a drug raid.

Indeed, it was quite an eventful day for Knight. Just hours before he was trotted out by Aston Villa he was led away in handcuffs after a house in Birmingham was raided by police. Knight and his brother were arrested on suspicion of possessing Class A drugs, which include the good stuff – heroin and cocaine.

For his part, Knight said he is innocent and charges were leveled against his brother but not him.

“Whatever has happened has happened and I am just concerned with what I’m doing. I know my career here has got off to a bit of a bad start but I’m happy to be here.

“Everyone knows I’m an Aston Villa fan. I have spoken to Martin O’Neill about it and he gave me his full support. He realises that I have done nothing wrong. It is a dream move for me and just hasn’t started off very well,” Knight said.

Actually, this is a pretty smart move by Knight. Start your career on a really low point and everything you do from here will be an improvement. Get into a pub fight, well at least he wasn’t arrested for drugs. Evade taxes, well at least he wasn’t arrested for drugs. Paternity lawsuits, better than a drug bust. Murder Joey Barton, better than a drug bust…

Even if he isn't charged you have to wonder how getting back to the old neighborhood and spending more time with his old friends might influence him. It appears the police had the house under surveillance for a long time. Hopefully it was just bad luck.
